Some ideas on communicating TTRPG gameplay expectations among players…
.) Play to have fun, not to win.
.) Use agreed safety tools (lines, veils, x-cards); no pressure to explain.
.) The GM is your narrator, not your opponent.
.) Share character secrets with the GM; no surprises during play.
.) Only roll dice when the GM asks.
.) Declare actions and intent first (how and why), then roll.
.) Roll where everyone can see the result.
.) Be honest about dice rolls, stats, and rules.
.) Actions have consequences, intended or not.
.) A failed dice roll might mean success with a cost.
.) True failures are story fuel; embrace them.
.) Share spotlight time; listen during other players’ turns.
.) Don’t argue rules or rulings mid-session.
.) Assume good intent on mistakes; clarify before you criticize.
.) Know your character’s abilities and spells before play.
.) Keep in-character and out-of-character separate.
.) Play what the character knows, not what the player knows.
.) Ask, don’t assume what is possible in-game.
.) Search and Study actions take time; quick glances don’t help.
.) Talking is a free action; commanding NPCs is not.
.) Spellcasting is obvious (visual, audiable) unless noted otherwise (i.e. Subtle Spell metamagic).
