This device resemble a smaller, palm-sized crystal ball, about 3 inches in diameter and weighing 2 lbs. Gazing into the orb reveals layers of arcane symbols spinning and orbiting around visions at the center of the sphere.
Instead of remote viewing, these orbs telepathically dispense memories and knowledge to those who hold them. Such orbs are similar in use to both mimirs and sensory stones found in Sigil, the extraplanar City of Doors, but scholar orbs cannot cast divination spells or affect its owner's conditions.
When attuned to a character, as a bonus action a character may focus on telepathically intuiting information from the scholar orb. The device does not need to be held, but it does need to be within 5 feet of its attuned user. The DM will provide specific CODE keywords to use in the search box in the upper right, or players may attempt to guess keywords and see whatever results come up.
Once between long rests while holding the orb, a user can use an action to cast the Sending spell from it. The target is the bearer of another scholar orb, or a group of up to six creatures attuned and within 5 feet of their scholar orbs. If no creature bears a scholar orb, the user knows that fact as soon as using the orb and does not cast the spell.
The orb has AC 18, 20 hit points, immunity to poison and psychic damage, and resistance to all other damage.
(DM's NOTE: This item is basically a fantasy smart phone, a MacGuffin to allow player characters to share information with each other and recall past game session notes.)
Sending
3rd-level evocation
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: Unlimited
Components: V, S, M (Note: No components needed to use this spell from the orb)
Duration: 1 round
You send a short message of twenty-five words or less to a creature with which you are familiar. The creature hears the message in its mind, recognizes you as the sender if it knows you, and can answer in a like manner immediately. The spell enables creatures with Intelligence scores of at least 1 to understand the meaning of your message.
You can send the message across any distance and even to other planes of existence, but if the target is on a different plane than you, there is a 5 percent chance that the message doesn't arrive.
