Notebook of Star Trek-isms

Below are my various somewhat random notes about creating Star Trek role-playing game adventures and stories. In addition to the TV shows and movies, ideas have also been cribbed from several RPGs…

* Star Trek: Adventure Gaming in the Final Frontier (Heritage Models, 1978)
* Star Fleet Battles / Star Fleet Universe (Amarillo Design Bureau, Inc., 1979)
* Star Trek: The Role Playing Game (FASA Corporation, 1982)
* Star Trek Roleplaying Game (Last Unicorn Games, 1998)
* Star Trek Roleplaying Game (Decipher, 2002)
* GURPS Prime Directive (Steve Jackson Games/Amarillo Design Bureau, Inc., 2002)
* Prime Directive d20 Modern (Amarillo Design Bureau, Inc., 2008)
* Far Trek (Mike Berkey, 2009)
* Star Trek Adventures (Modiphius Entertainment, 2017)

STAR TREK FASTER-THAN-LIGHT SPEEDS

How It Works: Starship projects an artificial “warp bubble” around itself, negating its mass while still being able to monitor normal space in real time. “Transwarp” adds the use of spatical “shortcuts” via conduits or other portals, such as stable wormholes.

* Standard Orbit (synchronous orbit around Earth) … 9,600 kph
* Impulse Power (speed open to a lot of debate, often considered 0.25c)
* Warp Factor 1 (1c) … 0.02 light years per day
* Warp Factor 2 (10c) … 0.03 light years per day
* Warp Factor 3 (39c) … 0.1 light years per day
* Warp Factor 4 (102c) … 0.3 light years per day
* Warp Factor 5 (214c) … 0.6 light years per day
* Warp Factor 6 (392c) … 1.0 light years per day
* Warp Factor 7 (656c) … 1.8 light years per day
* Warp Factor 8 (1024c) … 2.8 light years per day
* Warp Factor 9 (1516c) … 4.1 light years per day
* Warp Factor 9.2 (1649c) … 4.5 light years per day
* Warp Factor 9.6 (1909c) … 5.2 light years per day
* Warp Factor 9.9 (3053c) … 8.4 light years per day
* Subspace Radio, Warp Factor 9.9999 (200,000c) … 547 light years per day
* Transwarp (7912c) … 21.6 light years per day

In the ST:TNG episode “Force of Nature,” evidence of subspace damage caused by warp drives led the Federation to impose a “speed limit” of Warp Factor 6 except for emergency use.

(Source: There have been various “warp factor” scales listed in different “authoritative” guides over the years. This one comes from Star Trek The Next Generation Technical Manual published in 1991, with “Transwarp” added from later series.)

VARIOUS FTL DRIVE SYSTEMS IN STAR TREK

* Warp Drive (requires dilithium crystals; high warp speeds damage subspace and spawn unstable rifts)
* Hyperwarp Drive (late 24th century experimental system found on the USS Protostar)
* Spore Drive (technology lost in mid-23rd century; requires mycelial network of extradimensional fungal filaments)
* Quantum Slipstream Drive (late 24th century tech; requires artificial slipstream in subspace; unstable)
* Transwarp Drive (requires transwarp conduits and hubs through subspace)
* Coaxial Warp Drive (alien tech, unstable and not understood by Federation scientists)
* Soliton Wave Propulsion (pushes ships via a warp “wave” but dangerous and unstable)
* Wormholes (usually unstable portals, but the one near Bajor was kept stabilized by The Prophets)
* Iconian Gateways (extremely rare alien teleportation gates)
* Subspace Corridors (like transwarp; used by Vaadwaur species only)
* Dimensional Shift Drive (Scalosian tech, more like time travel)

MAJOR SPECIES FOUND IN STAR TREK

Founding United Federation of Planets species…
* Human: Diplomatic, adaptable, and curious. Often lucky, possibly a genetic trait.
* Vulcan: Highly logical, slightly telepathic, cautious. Immune to fear and charm.
* Andorian: Fiercely loyal, aggressive, honor-driven. Resistant to cold.
* Tellarite: stocky, argumentative, skilled engineers. Tough hides (natural armor).

Later…
* Androids/Synths: Very rare; 2385 attack on Mars by rogue Synths.
* Caitian: Feline humanoids, distantly related to Kzinti.
* Betazoid: Highly telepathic, honest, emotional.

* Orion: Green-skinned, reputation as pirates.

Outside the Federation within the Alpha Quadrant (or close enough)…
* Cardassian: Culture driven by militaristic, authoritarian rule. Reptilian.
* Ferengi: Culture driven by commerce and profit. Resistant to telepathy.
* Kzinti: Feline humanoids. Chauvinist, view females as inferior. Telepaths among their species tend to suffer neurosises and refuse to read the minds of herbivores.
* Tholian: Crystalline entities infamous for their territorial isolationism and xenophobia.
* Xindi: People made up of six different sentient species.

From Star Fleet Universe lore (not really canon)…
* Hydran Kingdom: Non-humanoid, rivals vs. Klingons.
* Lyran Star Empire: Feudal society.

In the Beta Quadrant (but close to Alpha Quadrant)
* Gorn: Strong, view other species as prey to feed their young.
* Klingon: Tough, culture driven by honor earned through conflict. Redundant organs.
* Romulan: Passionate but culture driven by secrecy, cunning, and politics.

In the Delta Quadrant…
* The Borg: Cybernetic hive-mind seeking to conquer and assimilate all others.
* Hirogen: Nomadic hunter culture.
* Kazon: Interstellar warrior culture.
* Ocampa: Short-lived species with latent psionic powers.
* Talaxian: Famed for cooking and hospitality.

In the Gamma Quadrant…
* The Founders: Shapechangers who rule The Dominion interstellar government.
* The Vorta: Genetically engineered humanoids, middle management of The Dominion.
* The Jem’Hadar: Genetically engineered reptilian humanoids, soldiers of The Dominion.
* Wadi: Humanoids, culture loves games of chance.

NEAR-OMNIPOTENT SPECIES/BEINGS

Seemingly true omnipotence…
* Q/The Q Continuum: Reality-warping, immortality, time travel, omniscience. Seems to enjoy testing the worth of mortal species. Hated by some interstellar cultures.
* Trelane (“The Squire of Gothos”): Near-godlike powers, but with childish immaturity to manipulated reality for amusement. May be an child of the Q Continuum.
* The Thasians: Immortal, powerful enough to grant or revoke omnipotence. Was the source of Charlie X’s power before it was reclaimed.

Interstellar omnipotence…
* The Organians: Energy-based beings, advanced intelligence, can disable entire fleets. Forced peace between the Federation and Klingon Empire.
* The Metrons: Advanced intelligence, teleportation, interventionist morality. Forced Kirk and the Gorn captain to fight in a duel. Stated that humanity might be worthy of friendship in 1,000 years.
* The Prophets (Wormhole Aliens): Nonlinear perception of time, exist outside normal space, can manipulate events. Reside in the Bajoran Wormhole. Defended Bajor by destroying a Dominion fleet.
* The Pah-Wraiths: Similar to the Prophets but considered malevolent. Considered themselves banished gods of Bajor.
* The Douwd: Immortality, limitless power, capable of erasing entire species. Posed as human Kevin Uxbridge. Wiped out the entire Husnock race (50 billion beings) in a single act of rage.

Planetary omnipotence…
* Nagilum: Immense intelligence, capable of creating illusions and controlling reality. Killed a Starfleet crew member just to study death.
* The Caretaker: Control over space-time, could transport ships across the galaxy. Brought Voyager to the Delta Quadrant. Created the Ocampa underground city.
* The Edo God: Omnipresence, reality manipulation, law enforcement. Watched over the Edo people.
* The False Greek Gods: Aliens with powers of energy projection, telekinesis, and the ability to grow to immense size. Claim to have once been worshipped on Earth. Confined to the Class M planet Pollux IV.
* The Cytherians: Vast intelligence, can reprogram technology remotely. Rewired Barclay’s brain to make him super-intelligent.

INTERSTELLAR GOVERNMENTS OUTSIDE THE FEDERATION
* The Klingon Empire: 20 Klingon “homeworlds” and many colonies; former Federation enemies, later allies. Value honor proven through conflict.
* The Romulan Star Empire: founded 2000 years ago, now controls up to 100 worlds; Fed. enemies until Spock’s reunification movement, then ends when a supernova destroys their homeworld in 2387.
* The Cardassian Union: controls 15 to 20 worlds plus many colonies; militaristic, authoritarian regime with Obsidian Order intelligence.
* The Breen Confederacy: cold-resistent physiology, powerful tech.
* The Tholian Assembly: xenophobic, territorial, crystalline-based species
* The Gorn Hegemony: reptilian, brutal, strong.
* The Ferengi Alliance: capitalistic, commerce-driven society governed by the Rules of Acquisition.
* The Xindi: five subspecies (Reptilian, Insectoid, Aquatic, Arboreal, and Primate).
* The Kzinti: large, sometimes telepathic, feline humanoids (same as Larry Niven’s universe). Fought – and lost – four wars against Earth, now banned from building a military (but may have own police force). Extremely misogynistic and biased against herbivore species.

OUTSIDE THE ALPHA QUADRANT

Gamma Quadrant…
* The Dominion: Founders/changelings rule, Jem’Hadar (warriors), Vorta (administrators).

Delta Quadrant…
* The Borg Collective: cybernetic hive mind that assimilates species and technology.
* The Kazon: fractured, warlike species that controls various sects.
* The Hirogen: nomadic hunter species obsessed with ritualized hunting of prey.

MAJOR KNOWN ALTERNATE UNIVERSES AND PARALLEL REALITIES

* Temporal Cold War Universe: Suliban Cabal vs. Federation Temporal Agents
* The “Wormhole Aliens” Universe: Home of The Prophets of Bajor fame.
* Yesterday’s Enterprise Universe: Where Narendra III help didn’t happen and the Federation and Klingons stayed at war for decades; paradox creates Sela, daughter of Tasha Yar.

TIME TRAVEL
* Department of Temporal Investigations (DTI): Secret group within Starfleet who police temporal paradoxes and time travel abuse. Key in fighting the Temporal Cold War against the Suliban Cabal (“anchored” around the year 2154). Operates a starship named The Relativity.
* The Guardian of Forever: A known time portal kept under quarantine on an nearly lifeless planet.
* The Nexus: A temporal rift that occasionally passes through Federation space.
* Temporal rifts or anomalies: Occur “naturally” or as random side-effects of other time travel technology.
* The Q Continuum: Omnipotent beings who can manipulate time and space.
* The Traveler: An explorer from another reality. Along with Wesley Crusher, helps create The Watchers (another type of temporal police).
* El-Aurians (Guinan’s race) are empathic and can sense shifts in the timeline.

STAR TREK: 25th CENTURY CAMPAIGN
(starting year 2421, about 20 years after the events of Star Trek: Picard Season 3)

State of Affairs…
* The Federation: Starfleet has recovered from the Borg’s Starfleet Frontier Day incident. Member planets continue to thrive. Vulcans remain largely withdrawn to focus on reunification aiding Romulan refugees who escaped the collapse of the Romulan Star Empire.
* The Klingon Empire: Another civil war of succession is drawing mercenaries (Orions, rogue Romulans).
* The Romulan Star Empire: Fractured into scattered warlords since the destruction of Romulus about 30 years earlier.
* The Borg: Recently neutralized as a threat. The Artifact, a 50-year-old derelict cube, remains under research study in the Federation-Romulan neutral zone. A few independent Borg freed from hive control wander the galaxy.
* The Cardassian Union: Shattered since the Dominion War, though factions of the Obsidian Order scheme to create the New Obsidian Union.
* The Tholian Assembly, the Gorn Hegemony, Kzinti: Each hostile isolationists, attack trespassers but don’t attempt to expand borders into neighboring interstellar space.
* The Dominion: Nearly 50 years have passed since the Alpha Quadrant-Dominion War, they have kept to the treaty and stayed in the Gamma Quadrant. (Starfleet’s Section 31 remains on the lookout for hidden changelings.)

Klingon Houses
* House of Martok: Currently in power but weakened.
* House of Gowron: Formerly in power.
* House of Toral: A major rival to Martok and Gowron.
* House of K’leeg: A contender.
* House of Kor: A legendary and ancient lineage.
* Dissolved: Mogh (Worf’s dishonored family), Duras (more dishonored).

LIFE IN THE 33nd CENTURY?
* The galaxy has suffered a massive collapse of interstellar civilization.
* Since The Burn, dilithium for FTL warp drives is very rare.
* “Programable matter” (nanotech) is common.
* The Federation and Starfleet are small echoes of their 24th century glory (dozens of members, not hundreds), but they are rebuilding and provide relief efforts for interstellar disasters (like the The Dark Matter Anomaly).
* The planet Vulcan is now called Ni’Var, home to Romulans and Vulcans.
* The Trill suffer civil war on their homeworld.
* Criminal syndicates are common (like The Emerald Chain’s Andorian and Orion slavers).
* Artificial Intelligence (AI) is common on starships, though androids remain rare.
* The Borg may have disappeared due to becoming fragmented in the 24th century (and sabotaged by Romulan secret agents).

STUPID HEADCANON IDEAS

GARY SEVEN
Gary Seven is the son of Capt. Seven of Nine. (She is addressed as “Captain Seven” at the end of Star Trek: Picard.) At some point in her future he is recruited by the Federation Department of Temporal Investigations (DTI), becomes Supervisor 194, and is sent on a mission back in time to Earth 1968 where he meets Starfleet Capt. James T. Kirk from the year 2267.

SECTION 31
The true mission of this group is to spy on Starfleet itself due to all the times its leadership has been compromised by enemy influences (Starfleet’s Admiral Cartwright colluding with Klingons and Romulans at Khitomer, the bug-like mind control parasites, the secret members of Zhat Vash, the Project Proteus changelings).
* “Every other great power has a unit like Section 31. The Romulans have the Tal Shiar, the Cardassians had the Obsidian Order.” – Odo.
* The Klingons don’t have a secret black ops assassin group since such killings are viewed as dishonorable. That said, Klingon Imperial Intelligence does exist to do espionage.

FEDERATION TIME TRAVELERS
Federation Department of Temporal Investigations (DTI) – technically all forms of time travel are banned, but enforcing this ban is like herding cats. Best they can hope for is to keep at least one stable version of the Prime Universe together (which is more a political goal than a cosmic one).
* branch offices in San Francisco on Earth and Sadvis on Aldebaran III
members include…
* DTI Special Agents Marion Dulmur and Gariff Lucsly
* As of 2373, James T. Kirk had the biggest file in the department’s records, with seventeen separate temporal violations.
* DTI Directors…
? to ? … Reginald Hartwell
2369 to ? … Laarin Andos
? to 2369 … Sornek
2275 to ? … Simok
2270 to 2275 … Meijan Grey

Temporal Conflicts
* Suliban Cabal conflict
* Xindi incident
* Na’kuhl conflict

TEMPORAL AGENT DANIELS
So Dr. Kovich (glasses guy from DSC, played by director David Cronenberg) of the 33rd century Federation was actually Agent Daniels (DTI agent in ENT Temporal War), and Kovich was a code name. He “lived many years, and many lives.” Might he possibly have been killed on occasion and replaced by willing parallel duplicates? Might he also have experience in alternate timelines? Possible crossover coordination with alternate timelines to protect those sci-fi universes? (The Time Variance Authority in the MCU, the Time Lords of Gallifrey in Doctor Who, whoever Booster Gold worked for, and so forth?)
